Fishing

St Helena is a fisherman's paradise, either a quiet day on the rocky coastline or the thrill of deepwater sport fishing.    The local boats set out around dawn and may catch their bait en route to the fishing grounds and boats normally return in the afternoon.  Different fishing grounds surround the Island and many varieties of fish can be caught.

It is possible to charter one of our local fisihing boats or even to accompany one of our experienced fisherman on a days fishing.  It is possible to hire equipment from the fisherman or you may wish to bring your own.  In the high season between April and August, Marlin, Wahoo and Sailfish are there for the sport fisherman. Other varieties include Barracuda, Tuna and deepwater Bullseye. Contact us (details on page footer) for more details.  Whilst fishing, there will be the added enjoyment of sailing through schools of dolphin or porpoises as well as seeing the occasional pod of whales.  Sharks can also be seen and rays may come quite close inshore at times.

Shore fishing is also enjoyed by islanders and visitors alike.  Fishing off rocky coasts or fishing from wharf steps in Jamestown or the small jetty Rupert's Bay are popular pastimes.
