Transport on the Island

Car rentals can be booked via the Tourist Office or through your travel agent. If you hire a car, make sure you are a named driver on the insurance policy. Remember to bring your driver's license with you.

Various tours are available to the visitor and can be organised through the Tourist Office.

Taxis: Details of taxis can be found in the telephone directory or at our Tourist Office. Taxis do not have meters so rates should be settled before the journey. There is a taxi rank in Jamestown.

Public Transport: St Helena has a very limited bus services.  Look for the "Getting around by bus" guide and timetables which can be found in the Tourist Office.

Roads are narrow and driving requires an adherence to certain etiquette.
Seaport: Jamestown is the only port on St Helena. The harbour consists of an open roadstead with three anchorages. Vessels of any size can use the anchorage. Passengers can be ferried by ships' tenders or local boats.

Motoring Etiquette

Most roads are single lane. Etiquette requires the driver coming down to make way for up-coming traffic.

Driving is on the left-hand side of the road (British Standards).

Typical road

Drink drive laws are strictly applied with a limit of 50µg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The safest course is not to Drink and Drive!

Speed Limits: Unless otherwise stated, normal speed limits are 30mph or 50kmph. Visitors hiring private transport should keep in mind that all road signs are shown in miles per hour and not kilometers per hour
