Various private tours available to the visitor can be organised through the Tourist
office or booked on the RMS St Helena.

The Castle: Seat of St Helena Government. The building (1708) is on the site of the first fort (1659).

Plantation House: Built in 1792, the beautiful Plantation House has been the residence of the Governors.

Longwood House: Napoleon's residence for the last years of his life. Owned by the French Government.

St Paul's Cathedral: Built in 1851, St Paul's Church is the Cathedral of the Diocese of St Helena.

|
Knollcombes: The graveyard of Boer POW's who died on the island between 1900 - 1903.

|
Diana's Peak: Natural heritage site which protects the island's subtropical plant species.

|
Sandy Bay: With its old fortifications and lime kiln used in the past for turning sea shells into lime.

Quick tours of the island can be arranged with taxis which include important sights on the island. Tours average about 3 hours.
Taxis are not equipped with meters. Visitors must check fares with the driver before the journey.
Official taxis have a special licence plate on the back of the car with an extra number at the end (233 4) which indicates the number of passengers allowed.
During good weather visits to the interior of St Helena are recommended for
wonderful views of the island.

Quick Orientation Tour Plan
TIME (1 hour): Take a taxi to Field Road and enjoy the view over Jamestown and the harbour. After this, take the taxi to Napoleon's Tomb and Longwood House where Napoleon spent his last days on St Helena.
TIME (2 hours): From Jamestown, take a taxi to Plantation House, the Governor's residence, built in 1792. On the large lawn you will find Jonathan the giant tortoise whose age is estimated at 170 years. After this take a stroll, a few hundred yards away, to St Paul's Cathedral which was built around 1851. On the return journey stop at Ladder Hill to view Jacob's Ladder and Jamestown.
Once you return to Jamestown take a stroll along Main street and visit the shops and eateries along the way.
For the Naturalist tours to visit George Benjamin's (BEM) plant arboretum, where rare or almost extinct plant species are being recovered, is a must.
The only endemic land bird on the island is the Wirebird, seen at Longwood and Deadwood Plain.
