Island Lifestyle

"Saints" are a very social and caring community who enjoy a pleasant and mostly rural life style amidst the island's peace and beauty.

The chief employer on the island is the St Helena Government. Other employment is based on local industries such as small-scale farming, retailing, tourism and ongoing investment related projects.

There are many religious groups on the island including Anglicans, Baptists, New Apostolics, Seventh Day Adventists, Salvation Army, Bahai and Jehovah's Witnesses. All are welcome to their services.

The enumerated population at the last census held in March 1998 was 5008 persons, excluding 149 working aboard the RMS St Helena.
St Helenians also reside on Ascension Island and the Falkland Islands.
There are four main centres of population on the island - Jamestown, Longwood and Half Tree Hollow.
The official and only language of the island is English.
