The official currency is the St Helena Pound, which is equivalent to (and fixed at parity to) the British Pound Sterling (£).


Denominations are £20, £10 and £5 notes and £1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p coins.

Banking

There are no ATMs on the island but the Bank of St Helena does offer cash advances on credit or debit cards which are part of the following schemes:

  • Visa

  • MasterCard

  • Maestro

  • Visa Delta

  Pound Sterling cheques can be cashed with a cheque guarantee card at the Bank of St Helena.  The Bank also exchanges Travellers' Cheques.
Most foreign currencies (notes only) can be exchanged at the Bank of St Helena

Payment Facilities

A limited number of shops and businesses accept Visa/MasterCard for payment (a  commission is charged).

Tipping is very much the individual's choice according to service. A tip of around 10% is suggested if service is found to be good.
